Thanks to Adam for finding this one. It has been a while since I have posted up anything motorcycle related, so this will be a nice one. Quite like the way it is put together (scotty, as my film guy guru – your thoughts?).
Shinya Kimura from Chabott engineering talks about making custom bikes, riding bikes. “I use my own hands and break my back making the bikes”.

As much as I like the idea of recycling and appreciate the complexity of natural biological systems the notion of cockroach urine recycling just makes them even creepier.

As much as I like the idea of recycling and appreciate the complexity of natural biological systems, this article on cockroach urine recycling just makes them even creepier.

Not only can they fly, squeeze under fridges, withstand a wide range of squash/flush and crush attempts (once I squashed one only to have then rip its “spine” out of its squashed body and keep on walking: just head, legs and trailing entrails as if nothing were the matter: better even because it was now a light weight version) but the bloody things don’t even need to piss!

The only known cute cockroach

That means there’s no “breaking the seal” problem on cockroach drinking nights thanks to this amazing little bacteria they picked up 140 million years ago. No conflicts between male cockroaches and feminazi cockroaches over the toilet seat issue.

Fantastic logic on this one "nearly fell in" etc

The cast iron bladdered creatures can stay up all night drinking in the post apocalyptic world without having to head off to the little cockroach’s room if they so choose. As an added bonus they’ve completely removed the whole awkward standing next to strangers at pub urinals issue (play the urinal etiquette game here if you don’t know what I’m talking about)!

Then after a hard night of drinking and recycling urine they can stumble home in the dark using the Earth’s magnetic fields to find their way. Amazing little revolting things.

I awoke in a daze haze. Sydney had a touch of a mad max, post nuclear apocalyptic feel to it.

Quite a surreal light this morning, thought initially that I was just up at the crack of dawn, but an hour of sleep in later and it was still a funny red colour. Thought my eyes were just not working properly for a while there. Where was the blue sky?

The view from the living room

The view of Coogee beach wasn’t quite so good this morning.

Coogee beach.. No really, it's there somewhere behind the dust.

Just like the snow sitting on cars! (Well, not really).

Car cleaners will be busy this week

On the way to work I couldn’t help but think this might be a sign of things to come worldwide if we keep destroying our farmland and having it blow away. This was freak wind doing the work, but if we don’t watch things: it might be the norm in a decade or two.

Heading to work, post apocalypse. The traffic lights looked fantastic though.

If anyone was filming a sci-fi movie about the end of the world today they just saved a bundle on post production specialfx.

I love TED talks, I wish I had enough time to watch them all but I don't. So I have to make do with the occasional one and spread the good ones around to people I know.

I love TED talks, I wish I had enough time to watch them all but I don’t. So I have to make do with the occasional one and spread the good ones around to people I know.

TED stands for “Technology, Entertainment and Design. TED talks, in case you haven’t heard me rave about them (or watched one in a previous post) are short talks given by people on interesting ideas. Their motto is “Ideas worth spreading”. TEDTalks came from TED conferences (I’d love to attend one one day) where a bunch of people get together to share ideas.

Here’s a quick handful that give you an idea of some of the incredible things that people present at TED talks. About the only ones I think fairly consistently suck are the song and poetry ones. Haven’t yet found a good one of either of those categories.

Mike Rowe celebrates dirty jobs
Captivating, engaging talk about how dirty jobs get a bad image.

Aubrey de Grey says we can avoid aging
Aging need not be inevitable. Reasons why we should strive to beat aging. I first came across this idea under the banner “Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS)“.
English really is the international language. Scarily so!

Saw this marvellous contraption parked out the front of my work a little while back. I’d say it handles with knife edge precision.

A true hard working bike

What would have been interesting was if the creator of this beast had installed a centre stand and some sort of hookup with the wheel that allowed the bike engine to drive the grinding wheels too.

Does the helmet double as eye protection?

Still: I like the idea of a trade that comes to you, with minimal vehicle footprint and then putts off to the next job.
