Thought this little animation was worth a post as Rupert Murdoch’s press will be pushing his nonsense after a tweet of his asking Al Gore to:
Pls explain record increase in Arctic ice. Other greenies crippling US growth in opposing safe tracking for natural gas.
Now, let’s just look at how the graph actually looks to people like Rupert (not that he would have looked at any sort of trend):
I think the best reply was from Ben Stewart:
Sure thing Rupe, it’s like the circulation of your newspapers. A constant ling term downward trend with occasional spikes.
Here’s another source of the ice graph showing a bit more detail:
There are a whole bunch of graphs available up here and the CSIRO has a page up with climate change information.
But I’d imagine the loyal minions at News Corp are busily working in climate change denial themed articles into tomorrow’s papers. That’s the trouble with people like Rupert’s approach to this – they steadfastly ignore scientists reporting on longer term trends and seize on a blip in the figures (particularly after last year’s low in sea ice).
It’s a real strange concept that on one hand you can see talk of things like a minerals/mining rush for previously iced over regions by energy companies while they’re funding quacks-for-rent like Lord of the lies Monckton to jet around the world pretending that it isn’t happening. A deliberate disconnect between their PR propaganda units and the logistics/strategic exploration goals.
Meanwhile Australia has just elected a conservative party with a PM who believes that “climate change is crap” and who has announced a cabinet where Science has disappeared into a subset of the Industry portfolio. Sad times for science and climate action in Australia.
Thanks to reddit user quink for introducing me to that .gif = brilliant.
